Jane’s Walk is coming to Bird Rock!

Bright murals enliven BR’s retail streets

Join us on May 7 at 10 am for La Jolla (and San Diego’s) first Jane’s Walk. Jane’s Walk is a free, global celebration of vibrant city/suburban life. We will walk through Bird Rock, one of La Jolla’s most charming communities.

Critical to great communities is people actually walking around the neighborhood. Jane Jacobs (after whom Jane’s Walk is named) was one of the first urbanists to promote the idea of “eyes on the street” as a way to keep communities safe and vibrant. When people are wandering out and about, crime is discouraged and informal meetings are encouraged. Local merchants also benefit from “feet on the street” because active street life fosters shopping local.

Our Jane’s Walk will start at La Jolla Hermosa Park (corner of Chelsea & Camino de la Costa) and wander through the retail district, ending with a beautiful beach overlook at Calumet Park. Jane’s Walk is free. There’s no advance registration. Just show up for an hour of exploration, conversation and fresh air!

If you have any specific questions, please contact me at mimi@artsntek.com. This is my first Jane’s Walk and I hope that this event becomes an annual part of La Jolla traditions.

See you on the street!

Jane’s Walk|La Jolla|May 7, 2022

After two years of Covid improvisation, Jane’s Walk is taking to the streets again. In force.

This global phenomenon, named for urbanist Jane Jacobs, is a celebration of neighborhoods. And more specifically, a celebration of walking community streets with your neighbors to strengthen neighborhood bonds.

For the first time, San Diego is participating with the first walks being offered in La Jolla. As a resident of this community for three years, I offered to host our first walks. And I invite you to join me.

Jane’s Walks are free. No registration needed. Just show up at the starting line at 10 am (location TBD soon) and walk with your friends and neighbors for about an hour. The conversation is open but we also hope to open your eyes to all the little things you love–or don’t– about your local streets. Conversation is the start of action.

For more information about our upcoming walk or to start a Jane’s Walk of your own, please go to Janeswalk.org or leave a comment below. See you on the street!

Jane’s Walk 2017: Putting feet first in city-building

Jane’s Walk, an annual global festival celebrating urban communities, is happening May 5-7 .  From Tel Aviv to Teheran and from Boston to Buenos Aires, people are taking to the streets to ….take to the streets!

Citizen-led and organized tours of cities give people a chance to really see the strength and diversity of their urban settings as well as the little nooks and crannies of neighborhoods they might otherwise pass unnoticed.

Jane’s Walk is named for Jane Jacobs, the author of the iconic Death and Life of the Great American City. Back in the early 1960’s, Jane’s book was the first  widely read clarion call to reclaim city life from the bureaucratic planners and highway-centric transportation experts who were tying cities up in freeway knots and building endless isolating skyscrapers that were destroying neighborhoods and any sense of community.

When Jacobs died in 2006, her supporters began Jane’s Walk as a citizen-led, free event to bring people together to explore their city. Whether checking out outdoor murals or identifying needed improvements, walkers come together for fun, fellowship and a chance to experience the power of cities to create and nurture community.
